As
you travel or visit others during the holiday, please remember to make sure
your baby ALWAYS has a safe
place to sleep at night and naptime.
Infants
are suffocating on adult beds, pillows, couches, cushions and blankets. You can
help protect your baby from suffocation, SIDS or other sleep-related infant
death by following these
basic Infant Safe Sleep
Recommendations when you travel.
- ·
Always take a pack-n-play
or portable crib with you if you’re not sure one will be available.
- ·
Remember that adult beds
are not safe for infant sleep. The safest place for your baby to sleep is in a
crib, bassinet or pack-n-play that meets current safety standards.

Lansing, MI – December 7, 2011 – Tomorrow’s Child has received a one-year grant from
the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to address racial disparities in sleep-related infant deaths
and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). The funds will be used to conduct focus groups
of African American and Native American mothers in communities with high
disparity in infant mortality rates.
One of the nation’s leading experts,
Dr.
Rachel Moon, Chair of the American Academy of
Pediatrics (AAP) Task Force on SIDS, will assist with focus group design and
data analysis.
In October 2011, the AAP Task Force
released expanded recommendations for a safe infant sleep environment. The focus groups will
help Tomorrow’s Child learn more about the barriers to acceptance of the safe
sleep recommendations and identify culturally and linguistically competent
communication strategies. As the ‘go-to’ resource for Infant Safe Sleep
information and materials in Michigan, Tomorrow’s Child will be developing new
messages and methods.“We appreciate the commitment of the
W.K. Kellogg Foundation to reducing infant deaths in Michigan,” said Sandra
Frank, CEO of Tomorrow’s Child. “This project will allow us to listen closely
to African-American and Native American mothers to find out what they know and
believe about infant sleep practices. Tomorrow’s Child was founded by parents
and we are uniquely positioned to ensure that their voices are heard as we
create new Infant Safe Sleep messages and outreach strategies.”
